Blues from Ballarat to New Orleans with Love

Musicians in Ballarat collaborate to raise money for musicians in New Orleans

The recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has had devestating consequences for many of the residents of the "Big Easy" (as the city of New Orleans is often known). The "Big Difficult" may seem a more apt term as local authorities and the rest of the world try to come to grips with the scale of this disaster in the world's richest country.

It should be of little surprise to anyone that the poorest people once again bear the brunt of the tragedy as they are made even more vulnerable from uncontrolled looting and crime and the callous indifference of officialdom. And of even less surprise should be the plight of musicians - renowned for being some of the poorest people in any society.

Now these players find themselves in an unimaginable situation: no home, no equipment and no gigs. And these are the people who have given us this wonderful heritage of blues and jazz - without New Orleans we probably wouldn't have any rock'n'roll - no Elvis, no Rolling Stones. And the Jazzers would all be playing Polkas.

The world would be a poorer place

In response to this tragedy the blues fraternity of Ballarat, with the help of some really good friends, are gathering for a benefit concert with the proceeds going to New Orleans musicians affected by the Hurricane. This event is being conducted in conjunction with the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society who will also be running similar events in Melbourne. MBAS have arranged the fund to ensure that the money will get to those musicians in most need.

Tickets are available at the door and will cost $10/head with all proceeds going to the appeal.
